When we last left off, I advised brides to start brainstorming for their dream weddings, snoop around on Pinterest here and there, and start gathering ideas… But, how can you start really diving into those details if you haven’t thought of a theme?

Choosing a theme for your wedding can be difficult. Avoid picking a theme that could limit your ideas. For instance, I knew I always wanted to involve the water into my wedding, but I wanted to veer away from simply a “nautical” wedding. I wanted my wedding to represent me, my husband-to-be, and my hometown of Annapolis. I wanted more than just a “beachy” theme.

Deciding to combine ideas and themes for a wedding is a great idea! It’s like describing your style of clothing – City Chic, Hipster Prep, Modern Classic – meshing two great visions that co-inside perfectly. When applying this same mindset to your wedding, the end result becomes unique and you guests walk away quite impressed.

Although I didn’t necessarily have a name for my style of wedding, I envisioned a garden of flowers meets the waterfront. From there, my ideas flowed in and I was able to execute an idea that “fit” my perfect wedding vision.

How did I execute this style?
I made sure to minimize the “nautical” feel by only incorporating an image of a sailboat on all the paper goods, such as the save-the-dates, my invitations, and response cards. Other than that, the scenery itself was nautical as the ceremony and reception site overlooked a stunning cove lined with sailboats.

Flowers can transform a wedding and really define a style. I envisioned dreamy, full flowers. I opted for coral and cream peonies. Another great flower that is often times overlooked is baby’s breath. I wanted to incorporate this flower into my décor, too. Baby’s breath helped dressed up my cake table and surrounding decorative vases. In addition, it is extremely inexpensive and ultimately a fantastic compliment to the luscious peonies. The end product was just darling and to this day, I still receive comments about the gorgeous flowers.

Tip: When visiting a florist, come prepared with photos and magazine clippings of your ideas, as well as favorite flowers. This saves time for your florist and really gives them a better idea as to what your vision is for your big day! Also, if you have an idea of the kind of flower you want in your wedding, they may have a better suggestion of a flower that still has the same characteristics, for cheaper!
