Dear Bayside Bride,
I keep hearing lots of talk about letterpress. What exactly is it and is it something I should go with for my wedding invitations? How does the price of letterpress compare with the price of other invitations?
Great question! Letterpress printing for stationery, especially wedding invitations, is a very hot trend right now. This printing technique typically combines lovely design with luxurious paper creating a stunning and irresistible combination.
To get down to basics, letterpress printing is a printing method that’s been around for ages. It starts with coating a metal or wood plate with ink. After the plate is created, ink is added to the sections of the plate to be printed. A sheet of paper is placed on top of the plate and the letterpress machine uses a rolling wheel to move back-and-forth across the surface of the paper, leaving an impression. Because you pay by the ink, having an invitation with multiple colors can really add up the costs. It’s lovely when an invitation can contain two ink colors to give it more depth and character. If you’re on a budget and find you need to cut corners, consider having the accompany cards letterpressed in just one color.
Speaking of cutting corners, because letterpress printing is a real science done by real pros, this form of printing will cause you to dig a little deeper into your pockets. It’s certainly jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but it’s also one of the more costly things you can do when it comes to printing your perfect invitation.
There are other ways you can have beautiful wedding invitations printed that do not cost as much. I personally am a fan of flat printing because it’s can be more cost-effective and you can design with more freedom in terms of the colors being used. Again, within the flat printing, there are a variety of levels ranging from offset printing (think the classic printing press) down to digital printing (think very fancy Xerox printer). The range of paper selection for these options is vast from shimmers to textures to heavy cover stocks… the possibilities are endless!
The most important thing when it comes to your wedding invitation is having a partner in the printing and design process. The stationer you choose will be your most valuable asset in getting the results you want. They can advise you on which printing methods can work best for your budget and be your guide on a journey that can get confusing quickly. Keep in mind, printing is only half of the puzzle to getting a beautiful invitation, the other half is having a design that is perfect for your special day. Do your homework and pick your stationer wisely!
