So the saying goes, “It’s good luck to have rain on your wedding day.” But no bride wants rain on her wedding day.  In reality, the truth is, there’s always a possibility. Couples wonder why would rain be a mark of good fortune?  It marks the start of a new chapter in life together, one that should be filled with blessings, happiness, and unconditional love.

Symbolically, the rain cleanses.  It allows you and your husband to start fresh with hopeful expectations in your marriage.

Rain can signify unity. A stronger bond is created when you are “tying the knot” in the rain. Water makes the knot harder to untie compared to a dry one. Just think, your bond will not be easily broken. Rain can also be a sign of fertility. Water allows things to grow. Hence, why rain on your wedding day can mean you will have many children.

 Although rain is never quite welcome, being prepared is key.

“Outdoor weddings are at the top of my list for some of the most beautiful days I have ever planned,” said Katie Boswell, owner and event planner of Saving Dates. “My suggestions to every client I have had that dreamed of an outdoor wedding is to always have a Plan B.”

First, check the weather for updates. Second, if you are having an outdoor ceremony and reception, plan on having a tent set up, umbrellas on hand for guests, or ask to be moved inside. Most venues are accommodating if there is inclement weather.  They understand this is a special day. Third, have your ushers help escort guests with umbrellas to and from the ceremony and reception.  Of course, everyone will be happier if kept dry.  Fourth, contact your vendors to make sure that they are prepared in case it should rain. Fifth, consider getting dressed at your ceremony location instead of at home. You want your dress to be protected. Even wait until the last minute to put on your shoes. The mud can easily ruin them. Matching rain boots for you and your bridesmaids are a big trend for rainy day weddings. Last but not least, wear waterproof makeup and have a bridal emergency kit on hand.

“We are strong advocates with coming up with a solid wedding rain plan and never leave weather to chance, said Maria Cookie, co-owner and event planner of Ritzy Bee Events. “From the very beginning of planning, think about your wedding day and venue from a logistics, health and safety perspective for everyone involved.”

Some questions you should be asking: “Are vendors able to safely unload and set up for the wedding? If it rains will drainage or mud be a factor if you are having a tented wedding without a floor?” said Cooke. “What are the walking paths guests and vendors serving food have to take during the entire wedding?”

Most of the time rain comes in spurts, which means all hope is not lost! According to Katelyn James of Katelyn James Photography, the light and colors are amazing on overcast days.  It allows for more freedom to shoot wherever a photographer wants.

“I tell all my brides that most of my best weddings are actually shot on rainy days,” she said. “I always love when I get to shoot in a little drizzle. You would be surprised at how creative you become when you are under pressure.”

Despite all the preparation of a wedding day and “Plan B”, if necessary, don’t let the rain let you shed some tears. Keep calm and carry on. Your day is bound to be everything you wanted and more.
